Fisker Karma

Fisker Selects Delaware

OK. I am no rocket scientist when it comes to business, but I found it interesting in today's announcement published in most newspapers today that Fisker Automotive, a California based maker of plug-ins has chosen a shuttered GM plant in Delaware for its new manufacturing facility. Delaware. OK. A recently shuttered GM plant is good for everybody. I am certain the costs are less to start up since this was recently closed as part of the GM debacle....so it is good for Fisker, good for GM creditors, good for the local economy and jobs....blah blah blah. I am just surprised at the local as the costs and union influences in this region would seem to make production costly. As with all newer technologies, it seems that the cost is a major driver
Now this is a plug in electric car with reported performance figures for my racy friends. The reported MSRP is to be $48,000 or so. Good looking car with good performance for that tag. Since we have not a lot of data on plug in pricing, we think this will be a decent value.....certainly, if you are going to pay over $40,000for a Chevy Volt, you will have a serious look at this. And that brings me back to the point of choosing Delaware. They expect this new factory to pop out 100,000 cars a year. Since the costs of these new technologies tend to be lack of scale in materials needed for the new technology, and you assume this too will be the case for the Karma (although at 100,000, scale is definitely creeping in), it seems the last thing you would want to do is to settle in a union state, with union wages, and union state of mind. What would the labor costs be if they settled in an open shop state? Maybe it does not matter, the cost savings of taking over an recently closed GM plant may outweigh the longer term costs. Who knows? I just found it curious, but definitely look forward to this one coming out.
I wonder how many are willing to sign on buying a car from a small independent manufacturer?

The 2011 Fiat 500

The 2011 Fiat 500 will be offered in the market during the initial months of the year 2011 as per the current plans. The delay has been mainly due to the fact that the designers in the Italy and U.S are taking long enough in redesigning/rebuilding the tools that are to be used for the production of the 2011 Fiat 500.
As far as the price of the vehicle is concerned, the Fiat 500 will cost about $16,000 in Italy, whereas the basic variant of the BMW Mini is just $6,000 in the American markets. The front end of the car is snub nosed and it has a relatively short bonnet.
The circular upper headlights along with the full beam lights in the down region are pretty interesting to look at. From the side view, the car looks like a squatter with its B-pillars and low roof line. The exterior design is also a bit different with sharply visible tail-lights along with the chrome handle, which bear the '500' logo of the car.
The boot space can be increased up to the 550 cc by folding the back seats from its original value of 185 cc. It is a real surprise that this small car can provide such spacious leg room. It will be offered in wide varieties o colors such as Mediterranean Blue, Ivory color and Pale White. The 2011 Fiat 500 will be offered in three trim levels - the Longue, Pop and Sport.

Camaro

1971 Camaro For Sale

The Chevrolet Camaro is one of the most instantly recognizable cars in the entire world. Its production spans nearly 45 years, including an 8-year hiatus, and five vehicle generations. It has been the source of muscle in the 1960s and 1970s, a pop-culture phenomenon in the 1980s, and a source of innovation in the 1990s and beyond. Each model year has its own special allure, but some distinguish themselves more than others do. One such specimen is the 1971 Camaro, a revision of the first 2nd-gen Camaro. The only knock on the '71 is that it had less horsepower than its predecessor did, but more on that in a moment.
Chevrolet introduced the second generation with the 1970 Camaro on February 26, 1970. Luxury sports cars, such as those by Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Jaguar, had provided the inspiration for Chevrolet's design of this all-new body. The result was a longer, lower, and wider style than what the Camaro had previously been. Such a dramatic change was risky, but critics and consumers alike responded to it with fanatical enthusiasm. The style was so popular that the primary shape would carry on throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s.
In comparison to the 1970 model, Chevrolet offered only minor appearance revisions and tweaks on the 1971 Camaro for sale. One prominent change was on the interior. Chevrolet swapped out the 1970-only low-back seats, which had been a terrible design decision, with all-new high-back Strato bucket seats that had built-in headrests. However, the biggest change in the 1971 Camaro foe sale came under the hood due to a corporate mandate. General Motors wanted all 1971 model year vehicles to operate on regular-leaded, low-leaded, and unleaded gasoline.
This change necessitated the reductions in horsepower and compression ratios that we alluded to in the introduction. Of course, this change wasn't isolated to the General Motors. That year and over the next several years, these changes were occurring throughout the American automotive market. The 250-cubic-inch 6-cylinder, the 307-cubic-inch V8, and the two-barrel 350-cubic-inch V8 were the same as they had been in the 1970 model because these were already low-compression regular-fuel engines.
The changes came to the "muscle" engines. Output of the LT-1 350-cubic-inch V8 used in the Z/28 fell from 360 to 330 horsepower due to a compression ratio decline to 9.0:1 from 11.0:1. Likewise, the big block 396-cubic-inch V8 fell from 350 to 300 horsepower due to a compression ratio drop to 8.5:1 from 10.25:1. At the time, these changes weren't as unpopular as you might think. There were two factors at play. One, the U.S. was heading toward a fuel crunch, and increasing fuel prices were already shrinking the muscle car market. Two, insurance rates for pony cars were skyrocketing. In terms of insurance, the 250 and the 307 were far more affordable than the 396.
These changes aren't as big of a deal from the perspective of the modern enthusiast. Employing modern equipment and expertise, we can squeeze a substantial amount of horsepower out of these engines more than at which Chevrolet originally rated them. An enthusiast in the market for a 1971 Camaro for sale can find one in need of work with rust spots for a couple of grand. Prices begin to rise sharply if you're in the market for a 1971 Camaro for sale in prime condition.

New Car Model

MINI Announces New Car Model

After its debut at the Detroit Motor Show, MINI USA Product Manager Vinnie Kung and engineering chief Oliver Friedman have announced that the much loved MINI brand is in fact set to go ahead with the production of its latest 'Paceman' design with people in both Scotland and the rest of the UK waiting in anticipation.
With production starting in around two years time, the fine tuning of the Paceman design may change from the concept model being shown throughout 2011, however the car itself will remain relatively unchanged with its tinted windows shielding the interiors. With copper detailing and a sturdy exterior the new MINI Paceman is set to get the pulses racing of any MINI lover.
The final model is likely to be positioned between the hatch and the recently released Countryman in terms of pricing and specification, however there will be a rear interior feature that is completely unique to the Paceman.
The R60 chassis will stay largely unchanged, but to be expected is the same Cooper/Cooper S engines and diesels (which will be even more powerful by the production date). We are told that the detailing on the interior will reflect that of the countryman and that instead of sliding rear seats, they will in fact be fixed.
MINI have already hit the automotive world with the hatch, Clubman, Countryman and Cabrio, and set to hit the showrooms this year are the two seat Coupe and Roadster.
The Paceman is set to start production in around two years time and will use the same manufacturing facility in Graz Austria as the latest new Mini. Scotland and the UK will also be hit this year with other new model releases, and who knows maybe a race car will be next.
Sara Wright is working within marketing and is currently researching new MINI Scotland
